Gallbladder cancer, a forgotten global cancer problem

Thank you for your interest in this special edition of Chinese Clinical Oncology, and welcome to this in-depth discussion and analysis of data on gallbladder cancer. This special edition would not have been possible without the dedication and contributions of all our dear colleagues from every corner of the planet, and thus represents a very global perspective and series of insights on this disease.

Despite its relative rarity, we continue to have an obligation to better understand and treat gallbladder cancer. From the epidemiologic perspective to histologic diagnosis and genetic analyses, a substantive amount of information and knowledge has been collected and is well detailed in the manuscripts comprising this special edition. These insights provide for better understanding and evolving surgical, interventional, and systemic therapies for gallbladder cancer.

A point to note is that increasingly this disease stands as a separate entity from biliary cancers and has distinct genomic underpinnings, patterns of presentation and recurrence. Studying biliary tract cancers gallbladder cancer, intra- and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas as separate entities is a worthy approach and we are very proud to see this show-cased in this special edition of Chinese Clinical Oncology on gallbladder cancer.
