Recent changes in the American Joint Commission Cancer staging of human papilloma virus related oropharyngeal cancer: validating the present and envisioning the future

The dramatically increasing incidence of human papilloma virus (HPV) related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) continues to capture the scientific and clinical interest of the head and neck oncologic world. While the oncologic potential of HPV has been recognized for decades in a variety of anatomical subsites, most notably the cervix, the dramatic rise in the incidence of oropharyngeal cancers related to HPV is a somewhat more recent development.
